Gertrude Smith, 77, a resident and past matron of the Gasport Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star, died Sunday (Dec. 21, 1997) in her Orlando, Fla., home after a lengthy illness.
The former Gertrude Penwright was a native of Lockport and was an inspector for the former Harrison Division of General Motors, retiring in 1976 after 25 years of service. She moved to Florida 19 years ago.
Mrs. Smith was a member of the United Church of Christ in Gasport, Myrtle Rebekah Lodge 84, Aerie 825, Fraternal Order of Eagles in Lockport, and Local 686, United Auto Workers. She was a 40-year member of the Gasport Chapter 153, Order of the Eastern Star, and served as matron in 1977.
She was the widow of Lee D., who died in 1979.
Survivors include a daughter, Nancy Vendetta of Orlando; a son, David of Olcott; two sisters, Pauline Lute and Eleanor Penwright; and a dear friend, Joseph Fabiano of Niagara Falls.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday in Sherrie-Bream Funeral Home, 4521 Main St.
