CLAUDE E. WHEELER, HOME BUILDER, EX-ATTICA GUARD

Claude E. Wheeler, 86, of W. Court Street died Sunday (Dec. 21, 1997) in Park Ridge Hospital, Rochester.

Wheeler had worked for both the town and state highway departments before going to work for the Houdaille Co. plant in Buffalo during World War II. He also was a guard at Attica Correctional Facility for eight years and in 1947 began working with his brother, Darwin, in the construction business. They built more than 50 homes and public buildings and remodeled many churches and stores in the Warsaw area. He retired in 1974.

Wheeler attended school in Varysburg and Warsaw.

He and his wife, Grace, were members of Silver Lake Golf Club for 33 years. Wheeler was a member of United Church of Warsaw and had served on the Board of Sessions. He was a member of West Star Masonic Lodge in Varysburg and held many offices.

Wheeler enjoyed hunting, fishing and woodworking.

He and his wife, the former Grace Glor, were married 59 years.

Survivors also include a son, Robert of Skaneateles; a daughter, Penelope Davis of St. Louis; two brothers, Darwin of Attica and Warren of Livonia, Mich.; a sister, Gladys Kreutter; and five grandchildren.

Services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday in Weeks Funeral Home, 123 N. Main St. Burial will be in Pleasant View Cemetery, Dutch Flats.
