ROSE SMALLEN, SOLD ACCESSORIES AT SAMPLE SHOP

A memorial service for Rose Smallen, a former Buffalo resident who sold accessories for many years at the Sample Shop on Hertel Avenue, will be held at 2 p.m. Friday in Temple Beth Am, 4660 Sheridan Drive, Amherst.

Mrs. Smallen, 84, died unexpectedly Dec. 10, 1997, in a nursing home in Tamarac, Fla.

The former Rose Tavrow was born in Utica and moved to Buffalo after marrying Maurice Smallen, her husband for more than 50 years. Smallen, who died in 1991, was owner of the former Ferry Auto Supply in Buffalo. The Smallens moved to Florida about 15 years ago.

Mrs. Smallen sold accessories for many years at the now-defunct Sample Shop and worked briefly at Westwood Pharmaceutical.

She was a member of Queen Esther Temple, Pythian Sisters, and the former Temple Emanu-El.

Survivors include two daughters, Rita Kitt of Sacramento, Calif., and Hillary Ruchlin of Amherst; a son, Sidney of Washington, D.C.; seven grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.[psmon]
