A 2-year-old girl slipped and fell about 170 feet to her death off the Golden Gate Bridge Sunday.
A spokesman for Children's Hospital Medical Center in Oakland identified the dead child as Gauri Govil of Fremont. She was with her parents and 4-year-old brother on the pedestrian walkway north of the north tower of the world famous bridge when she stumbled.
A spokeswoman for the California Highway Patrol said Gauri fell through a 9 1/2 -inch gap in the I-beam that separates the sidewalk from the traffic lanes.
The child fell about 170 feet and landed in the dirt on a bridge service road, which runs along the coast near the water on the Marin County side of the bridge, a Coast Guard spokesman said.
The Coast Guard initially found the child with a pulse, but she was not breathing, and three Coast Guard personnel tried to perform mouth-to-mouth resuscitation.
She was then taken by a helicopter to Children's Hospital, where she later was pronounced dead.
