SHOPPER BUYS HIMSELF SUPERHERO DUDS

A Swedish computer executive in town for some Christmas shopping is flying home with Superman's cape.

The crimson garment worn by Christopher Reeve in the 1978 film fetched $17,000 Saturday at a Sotheby's auction of Hollywood and rock 'n' roll memorabilia.

Stefan Hallin also bought the maroon Star Fleet command jacket worn by William Shatner during the 1982 film "Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan." The price tag on the jacket -- $11,000.

The 28-year-old executive from Gothenburg joked that he may wear the cape as "a robe in the morning. . . . I didn't expect to find these good gifts for myself."

During breakfast Saturday in his hotel room, Hallin spotted a television program that mentioned the Sotheby's sale. With barely time to slip into a phone booth, he "rushed into a cab and got here in time, fortunately," Hallin said.

Superman's cape had been given as a prize for a contest sponsored by DC Comics.
