Congratulations to all the selections to The News' All-WNY football team. With the deep tradition of high school sports in our area, every player should be proud of himself and his school.
However, for all those who oppose the private schools entering Section VI on the grounds that private schools recruit and enroll the best players in WNY, this year's selections prove this not to be the case. Of the first 49 players honored, only six attend private schools.
I believe every athlete selected deserves the recognition he or she has worked so many years to attain, but the argument that the private schools have the best players gets disproved every year.
In addition, without the opportunity to showcase their talents in the highly publicized games at Rich Stadium, the private school players lose a great deal of exposure that could affect the remainder of their high school careers as well as potential opportunities at the college level. If you let the kids decide, they will choose to play at every school, not just the ones in their section.
