A Buffalo man was shot in the arm and chest by a Cheektowaga resident who found him in his car early Saturday apparently trying to steal it, police said.
David S. Krzeminski, 32, of Briscoe Street was in stable condition with a gunshot wound in St. Joseph Hospital in Cheektowaga. He was charged with assault, criminal mischief and possession of a weapon.
Police said Thomas Kalis of Avery Place, Cheektowaga, saw Krzeminski inside his car at about 7 a.m. and approached the car, drawing a .38-caliber revolver for which he has a permit.
"Krzeminski did lash out at Kalis with a long screwdriver, cutting Kalis across the chest," an officer said. "Kalis fired one round from his weapon."
Krzeminski fled and was picked up by a friend who took him to 97 Briscoe St., where officers found him hiding in the attic.
Kalis, who also was treated at St. Joseph, is not expected to be charged.
Officers said they believe Krzeminski broke into Kalis' car in an attempt to steal it.
