DOWNED WIRE CAUSES POWER FAILURE

A downed wire in the 500 block of 10th Street cut power to 265 homes and businesses Saturday morning on the East Side and South End, according to a Niagara Mohawk Power Corp. spokesman.

Among those affected were the Convention and Civic Center, the Holiday Inn and the Jefferson Apartments, city fire officials said.

Power went out at 8:30 a.m. in areas bordered by Buffalo Avenue, Cedar Avenue, 10th Street and Portage Road.

Niagara Mohawk restored power to most customers by 9:20 a.m. and to all customers by 12:30 p.m., according to utility spokesman Stephen Brady.

He said the utility is trying to determine what caused the power line to break.
