I was greatly disappointed after reading in The News that Children's Hospital has lost a $450,000 annual federal grant for the Parents and Children Together program. With the number of drug-addicted and HIV-infected infants increasing, I find this loss of funds most disturbing.
As a community health nurse, I recognize the dire need for this program. Families are facing more substance abuse and HIV-related issues along with a reduction of services to the most vulnerable in our society -- our children.
The essential role of the home-visiting staff needs to be understood. Often these mothers and children need home-environment assessments and case management to effectively develop a specialized plan of care. These high-risk young families need more support, not less.
