RIVER IS BEING TESTED FOR RADIOACTIVE SEEPAGE

Testing began Thursday to determine whether radioactive substances and heavy metals from the troubled Brookhaven National Laboratory have seeped into the Peconic River on eastern Long Island.

The testing is being performed by two local groups -- Fish Unlimited of Shelter Island and the Star Foundation of East Hampton -- in cooperation with the lab, the Department of Energy, Suffolk County and the towns of Riverhead and Southampton.
