In the race for Erie County sheriff, Democratic candidate Rocco J. Diina has harshly criticized the voting record of the Republican candidate, Patrick Gallivan. I'd like to point out that people often do not vote when there isn't a candidate they like, or one who stands for the issues they believe in.
Unfortunately, many candidates are forced upon voters because they have the backing of a political party. Likewise, many good candidates are left off the ballots because they lack that backing.
I don't think the sheriff's race should be a political race. It should be a race for who is the best qualified for the job and who will run the Sheriff's Department in a responsible way.
