The Cheektowaga Police Department's highly successful Cops in Shops program has received a $6,000 county grant, which together with $7,000 from other sources will fund it for another year.
The program, the only one of its kind in the state, places undercover officers in participating retail stores to deter purchases of alcohol by underage youth.
"We had more than 30 arrests last year and a number of spin-off arrests involving drug sales and things like altered driver's licenses," according to Lt. M. James Starr, who runs the program.
The county grant is through the efforts of Legislator Raymond K. Dusza, Starr said.
The Cheektowaga Action Partnership is contributing $4,000 and $3,000 will come from the property forfeiture from drug cases.
