John Mazza, taking advantage of every break, beat top-seeded Dave D'Entremont, 220-212, to complete a climb from the No. 5 qualifying position to win the Professional Bowlers Association's Ebonite Challenge title in Indianapolis.
"Everyone I bowled tonight left the door open for me at some time," Mazza said. "And fortunately, I was able to take advantage of it."
Mazza became the eighth player to win two titles this year and the second to win from the fifth seed this year as he beat Del Ballard Jr., Buffalo's Tom Baker and Mike Edwards along the way.
In the second match of the night, Baker became only the fifth player this year to open only in the 10th frame on TV. It cost Baker the match, which Mazza won, 216-203.
Mazza won $21,000. Baker, finishing fourth, won $6,000 to bring his year's total to just over $69,000.
