H. Gay Barker, 76, widow of a former rector of St. Matthias Episcopal Church in East Aurora, died in her sleep Tuesday (Oct. 28, 1997) in her East Aurora home.
The former Gay Daniels was the widow of the Rev. H. Russell Barker, who served as rector of the East Aurora church from 1958 to 1982. They had been married for 52 years at the time of his death in 1996.
Born in New York City, Mrs. Barker had resided in Western New York for nearly 50 years. Before moving to East Aurora, she and her husband had lived in Manhattan, Hudson Falls and Buffalo.
Mrs. Barker was a member of East Aurora Country Club and the Bishop Davis Guild of St. Matthias Church. She was an avid bridge player and was known for her fondness of sterling silver bracelets, always wearing several on each arm.
Surviving is a son, H. Russell Jr. of Virginia Beach, Va.
Bishop David C. Bowman of the Episcopal Diocese of Western New York will officiate at a Requiem Celebration of Holy Eucharist at 2 p.m. Saturday in St. Matthias Church, 374 Main St., East Aurora. Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery, East Aurora.
