LOS ANGELES MAYOR WANTS COUNCILMAN'S RESIGNATION

Mayor Richard Riordan called on Councilman Mike Hernandez to resign within hours of his guilty plea to cocaine possession.

Hernandez was fined $200 and ordered to attend a 36-month drug rehabilitation program that will enable him to retain his Council seat and later have the drug case wiped from his record.

Hernandez, 44, a leading advocate for the city's huge Hispanic population, said Monday he had no intention of resigning.

Hernandez was arrested in August after undercover police saw him buying cocaine from two sources and snorting it in his truck before a public meeting.
