Joseph E. Schamann, 71, employed for many years at Bethlehem Steel Corp. and Canisius College as a security guard, died Sunday (Oct. 26, 1997) in Our Lady of Victory Hospital, Lackawanna, after a lengthy illness.
Born in Buffalo, he attended South Park High School, enlisting at age 17 in the U.S. Navy and serving in the Pacific Theater.
He joined Bethlehem Steel's security division in 1950 and left there with the rank of sergeant after the plant's closing in 1983. He then worked at Canisius College as a patrol officer and emergency medical technician, retiring in 1992 after receiving three commendations for his work.
Survivors include three sons, Joseph A., Matthew and Mark V., all of Hamburg; three daughters, Kathleen Wales of Lackawanna, Patricia Banish of Orchard Park and Dr. Mary E. of Hamburg; a sister, Regina Bigelow; a brother, Peyton of Blasdell; eight grandchildren; and three great grandchildren.
Prayers were said today in Charles F. McMahon Funeral Home. A Mass of Christian Burial was offered in St. Bernadette's Catholic Church, Hamburg. Burial was in Hillcrest Cemetery, Hamburg.
