I recently discovered a magnificent memorial to Civil War soldiers in the Leon Cemetery on Route 62 in the Village of Leon in Cattaraugus County.

It is a massive monument, measuring more than 6 feet square at the base and slightly more than 18 feet in height. At the peak stands a Union soldier, holding his rifle.

The legend at the base states: "Monument in memory of the soldiers of the Civil War, 1861-1865. Their Leon friends erected this monument, 1911."

Some of the memorials that have been erected in other cities and towns to commemorate service veterans of other warsappear superficial and almostinsignificant compared to this beautiful monument.

The population of the small community of Leon demonstrated their concern and generosity in contributing to this memorial.

Interested individuals can witness this exemplary tribute on one of their Sunday drives. It is clearly visible from Route 62.
