Chris Dickson resigned Tuesday as skipper of Dennis Conner's yacht Toshiba, which finished a disappointing sixth out of 10 boats in the first leg of the Whitbread Round the World Race.

Paul Standbridge, in his fourth Whitbread, was promoted from watch captain to skipper for the final eight legs of the 31,600-mile race. He'll be assisted by Whitbread first-timer Ross MacDonald, who will take the helm in close conditions, such as the start of each leg.

Conner, a four-time America's Cup winner who's heading up his second Whitbread campaign, plans to be aboard for just a few legs.

The next leg starts from Cape Town, South Africa, on Nov. 8. It will take the fleet to Fremantle, Australia, where the yachts are expected to arrive around Nov. 23.
