Luciano Pavarotti was given a special achievement award on Monday for raising $8.2 million for the war children of Bosnia.

Pavarotti, presented the prize by fellow opera star Kiri Te Kanawa at the annual Gramophone Awards, had joined forces with a string of pop stars to record open-air concerts in his hometown of Modena.

Proceeds from the charity albums recorded with such singers as Elton John and Liza Minnelli went to the aid organization War Child, started in 1991 by two cameramen shocked by what they saw in the war in former Yugoslavia.

The money was used to set up a musical therapy center for war-affected children in the Bosnian city of Mostar.
