Freshman forward Ashley Murphy scored a first-half goal as Nardin Academy clinched the Msgr. Martin Association girls soccer title, 1-0, over defending champion Holy Angels on Monday.
Murphy's goal came 25 minutes into the game played before 250 fans at the Canisius College Demske Complex. "She took a shot, the ball was pretty slippery, and it just went through the goalie's hands," said Nardin coach Andre Gorzynski. "It was a tough goal."
The title was the first for the Gators in four years. Nardin sweeper Maryn Necel kept the Angels offense at bay, and goalie Jill Gorman earned the shutout, her seventh of the season.
Nardin (14-1-1) advances to the state playoffs Nov. 8 at Canisius.
Class B quarterfinals: Julie Gentner, the ECIC II scoring leader with 26 goals, had a hat trick to lead Williamsville South to a 4-1 win over Medina. The Billies (14-3-2), ranked No. 4 in Western New York, also got a goal from Krissy Costanzo.
Laurie Puzio scored with 2 minutes left in the first overtime, giving Williamsville East (9-7) a 2-1 upset of ECIC II champion Iroquois. Sara Neale had a second-half goal for the Flames after Robyn Burkett had given Iroquois a 1-0 lead. East is 9-7.
Vicki Pudlak and Lauren Bruce scored the goals and Molly Malliea made three saves in goal in Amherst's 2-0 triumph over Starpoint. The Tigers are 14-3.
Class C quarterfinals: Tricia Korb scored in the first period and Jessica Jones made nine saves as Akron (7-6-2) defeated visiting Holland, 1-0.
