It doesn't take much research to pick a favorite in Friday's Class B girls race at the Section VI cross country championships at Elma Meadows.

After a season of dominating races, East Aurora sophomore Peggy Melonic is the clear choice to win her second consecutive title. A healthy Heather Cappello and her sister Lisa will contend for Starpoint.

At last weekend's ECIC meet at Alden, Melonic shattered the course record, finishing in 18:07. The previous record was 18:34 held by 1995 Orchard Park graduate Laura Hribik.

Among the Class A girls, Orchard Park's Michelle Daniels and defending champion Lindsey Jochum are favorites along with Lockport's Jen Marotta. Daniels set a school record at Alden with an 18:22. In Class C, junior Janine Emke of Randolph goes for her third sectional title.

In Class A boys, Todd Witzleben of Orchard Park defends his title with Kenmore West's Brendan Cameron looking for the upset. In Class B, Mike Ryan should lead the pack with Taylor Dewey of East Aurora close behind. In Class C boys, Dustin Thomas (Franklinville), Ryan Long (Silver Creek) and Sean Damon (Barker) will battle.
