LIDDELL ST. MAN CHARGED WITH RAPE, SODOMY OF 2 WOMEN

A Liddell Street man allegedly raped and sodomized two women at gunpoint after binding their wrists and covering their mouths with duct tape in a Cayuga Street home early today, authorities said.

Hessie L. Winbush, 23, was caught as he bicycled from the scene onto the 1200 block of Broadway at 4:10 a.m. after the women flagged down Broadway Station Officers John Simonian and Timothy Mulhern in the Central District.

"When we stopped him, he said 'I'm going home, I'm going home.' He told us he was out drinking with a buddy, but he later admitted he had sex with the women, telling us 'they were just (prostitutes),' " Mulhern said.

The women were taken to Erie County Medical Center for treatment, police said. One of the woman suffered a head injury when Winbush allegedly hit her with his handgun.

Police said he struck her with the handgun after she attempted to resist Winbush's order to engage in a sexual act with the other woman, following his attack.

Winbush had met one of the woman around 3:30 a.m. and was invited to her Cayuga Street girlfriend's home, where he took out a handgun and began the assault, according to police.

Central District Officers Danielle Bratton and Deana Hoefler, who were flagged down by the victims, sent out a detailed police radio description of the suspect, which was instrumental in bringing about the arrest, according to authorities.

Winbush was charged with first-degree rape, first-degree sodomy, unlawful imprisonment, first-degree burglary and criminal possession of a weapon.
