ILLNESS KNOCKS OUT BREEDERS' CUP FAVORITE

A fever will keep Gentlemen, once considered a favorite, out of the $4 million Breeders' Cup Classic at Hollywood Park on Nov. 8, his trainer said.

The decision had been pending since late in the week but had to be made before noon Monday, when a non-refundable one-third of the $800,000 entry fee was due.

Gentlemen ran a fever that reached 102 degrees Thursday, two to three degrees higher than normal for a horse. He was unable to make an important one-mile workout Sunday morning.
