To make it easier for the hearing-impaired to serve on juries, Erie County jury officials have set up a text Teletype device in the jury commissioner's office on Delaware Avenue.
Court officials felt time had come to allow hearing-impaired individuals to contact the jury office directly to determine when they have to serve, said Mehrl F. King, county commissioner of jurors.
To communicate with the TTY system, King said, individuals need access to similar equipment or can purchase it for about $400. King said he believes many hearing-impaired people already have such devices.
State Supreme Court, Erie County Court and Buffalo City Court need about 37,000 jurors annually, King said, and the new system will save the hearing-impaired the time and expense of going through an 800 telephone number to contact his office through the telephone company.
