Eugene J. Zadzilka, 69, a former Lackawanna High School principal, died Saturday (Oct. 25, 1997) at Mitchell Campus of Hospice Buffalo, Cheektowaga, after a long illness.
Born in Lackawanna, he earned a bachelor's degree in social sciences from Canisius College in 1951 and a master's degree in education from Canisius 1959.
Zadzilka starred in basketball at both Lackawanna High School and Canisius.
"He had the potential of being a pro," said his his son, Eugene W. of Madison, Wis. "He also played in the Air Force."
Zadzilka served in the Air Force from 1951 to 1954.
He taught social studies at Lackawanna High School from 1957 to 1967 and coached basketball at the school from 1959 to 1967.
Zadzilka became assistant principal at Lackawanna High School in 1967 and was promoted in 1971 to principal, a position he held until his retirement in 1985.
Zadzilka was a member of Matthew Glab Post 1477, American Legion, and served as chairman of the post's Boys State program. He also was a member of the Buffalo Frontier Safety Council and taught defensive driving.
In addition to his son, survivors include his wife of 41 years, the former Alice Chwala of Lackawanna; his mother, Mary F. of Blasdell; two brothers, Edmund of Blasdell and John of West Seneca; and a sister, Mary Ann Huber of Orchard Park.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 9:15 a.m. Wednesday in St. Michael the Archangel Catholic Church, 144 Warsaw St., Lackawanna. Prayers will be said at 9:15 in Jos. M. Litwin Funeral Home, 1629 Electric Ave., Lackawanna. Burial will be in Holy Cross Cemetery, Lackawanna.
