The age-old story now has a multicultural twist.
Rodgers and Hammerstein's "Cinderella" will air Sunday on ABC's "Wonderful World of Disney" with a star-studded cast of actors from a variety of ethnic backgrounds. Pop diva Whitney Houston, who helped develop the idea, told TV Guide that she believes the Cinderella story is universal enough to speak to children of all colors.
The lead role in the $12 million production will be played by Brandy Norwood, a recording artist and star of the TV-sitcom "Moesha." Other cast members include Houston as the fairy godmother, comedian Whoopi Goldberg as the queen and "Seinfeld" star Jason Alexander as the prince's valet, a newly created character.
