The University at Buffalo basketball team drew Texas Southern as its first-round opponent Dec. 28 in the Cessna Classic in Wichita, Kan. William & Mary and host Wichita State will meet in the other opening-round game.

Coach Tim Cohane's Bulls have an early Mid-Continent Conference opener Nov. 15 against Southern Utah in Cedar City, Utah. Southern Utah and Oral Roberts University of Tulsa, Okla., are new members of the Mid-Con this year.

UB's home schedule will begin Monday, Nov. 24, against Cornell at Alumni Arena.

MEN'S SOCCER: Adam Lonergan scored unassisted at 1:04 of overtime, giving Canisius a 3-2 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference victory over visiting Marist. The Griffs (3-14, 3-5) snapped a four game losing streak against the Red Foxes (1-11-1, 1-5-1). Nate Fillmore began the Canisius comeback when he scored with only 27 seconds left in the first half. Charlie Williams tied the game in the 53rd minute on assists from Jay Joseph (North Collins) and Ryan Puntiri.

UB (6-7-1) bowed to visiting Howard University, 2-1, on a goal by Greg Simmons at 5:48 of overtime. Joe Peplinski gave the Bulls the lead at 74:29, but Mike Lawrence scored unassisted at 78:57 to tie it.

St. Bonaventure kept its hopes of qualifying for the Atlantic 10 Conference tournament alive with a 3-0 victory over visiting St. Joseph's of Philadelphia as David Servell, Tom Lemmon and Cathal Kenny hit the scoring column. The Bonnies must win both of their remaining conference games, at home against Temple and Duquesne, to finish in the A-10's top four and qualify for the conference playoffs. Goalkeeper Adrian Kane recorded his first shutout of the season.

HOCKEY: Goalie Jamie Ronayne registered a school record 71 saves but Buffalo State still bowed to Mercyhurst (3-0), 7-2, in the first round of the Fredonia Tournament. It was the Bengals' season opener. Todd Nowicki (O'Hara) and Brent Ford scored the Buffalo State goals.

Sophomore Mike Bowers (Clarence) scored two goals and assisted on two others and Jim Kennedy broke a 6-6 tie with 1:37 left for Erie Community College (1-0) in an 8-6 triumph over Kent (0-5).

WOMEN'S SOCCER: Kirsten Hanson scored the lone goal and goalkeeper Jamie Adams registered four saves in UB's 2-1 loss at Bowling Green. UB is 5-10-1. . . . Ann Keegan scored on a penalty kick at the 77-minute mark but St. Bonaventure dropped a 2-1 Atlantic 10 decision to St. Joseph's in Philadelphia.

WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL: Kathy Brinkworth recorded nine kills as UB (12-13) defeated Robert Morris, 15-5, 15-6, 15-12. . . . St. Bonaventure (3-18, 0-11) lost to LaSalle, 15-7, 15-13, 14-16, 15-4, in Philadelphia despite a strong defensive performance by senior Nikki Renninger, who has 12 kills, 15 digs and two blocks.
