FAKE BOMB USED IN BANK ROBBERY

State police are searching for the man who used a phoney bomb to rob the Key Bank at 4401 Transit Road in Clarence Friday morning.

A man wearing a hat, wig and some makeup -- apparently trying to disguise himself as a woman -- walked into the Key Bank next to the Eastern Hills Mall at about 9:45 a.m., said Investigator Ken Black.

The man passed the teller a note that demanded cash and said he had a bomb, Black said.

The man grabbed a handful of cash from the teller and ran out the bank's back door. He left a handbag on the counter with what appeared to be three sticks of dynamite, Black said.

The state police were called and the bank employees evacuated the building. The Erie County Sheriff's Bomb Squad arrived at the scene and determined the "dynamite" was really three road flares.

The robber ran off with an undetermined amount of cash, Black said.
