BRIDGE HAS TO IMPROVE THE WAY IT COLLECTS TOLLS

A few thoughts have occurred to me while waiting in line on or near the Peace Bridge.

The prospect of a new span is exciting, and the Peace Bridge Authority should give it careful consideration. The new bridge should, as far as structurally and economically possible, duplicate the design of the old one. Pairing the bridge with a more stylized structure would, in the end, detract from both designs. The result would be visual confusion.

But that confusion is in the future. Today there is confusion, but it could be easily cured. There are now three different types of toll collection booths: tokens only, cash only and cash and tokens. With traffic entering from two directions, I-190 and Porter Avenue, chaos and tie-ups are common. Toll collection methods need to be changed. Every lane should accept tokens and cash. The technology to do this already exists and is used in most major cities.
