As chief executive officer of Manco Inc., the nation's leader in "Duck Tape" sales, Jack Kahl promised to shave his head if his troops met their sales goals for the fiscal year.

The clippers came out Friday.

"It's a little cooler on the top of my head, but it was a good reason to lose my hair," Kahl said after Manco's "Duck Challenge Day," a celebration the executive created eight years ago as a tribute to his hardworking team.

Manco's 1997 sales of $167 million were a 13 percent increase from last year.

"If you can make work fun, it inspires everybody," Kahl said.

Kahl likes being the "Big Duck" instead of the "Big Duct." Manco changed the name of the tape developed for the armed forces in World War II to give the company a niche in the marketplace.
