I am writing in response to a letter thatappeared in The News on Oct. 17 entitled "City needs another college-prep high school."
The letter stated that the city's only "college-prep" schools are City Honors and Hutchinson-Central Technical High School, with some mention of other quality schools such as Lafayette, McKinley, Bennett and Emerson. What is left out, as it always is, is the existence of Leonardo da Vinci High School.
Da Vinci High School is located on the third and fourth floors of D'Youville College. Students have direct interaction with the campus daily, especially with the college students.
During their junior and senior years, students who demonstrate the ability to balance good grades and extracurricular activities and who show a certain level of maturity are allowed to attend college classes for college credit.
From the very first day of school, students have access to the D'Youville College Library.Biology classes studying the human body receive hands-on learning by visiting the D'YouvilleCollege morgue. On occasion, professors and students from the college visit the classrooms and speak with students. Leonardo da Vinci exemplifies the essence of what a college-prep school is and should be.
I am a proud 1994 graduate of the school and recommend students looking for a high school to give them that "extra edge" consider Leonardo da Vinci. This one-in-a-million school is one of the city's hidden treasures.
