Four to 5 inches of snow fell early Thursday as a lake-effect storm hit Chautauqua and Cattaraugus counties and adjacent areas. The snow tapered off during the morning.

Stockton reported 5 inches, while 4 inches were measured in Bemus Point, Charlotte, Arcade, Leon and Little Valley. Jamestown registered 3 inches. An inch fell in Olean, and Dunkirk had just a trace.

The heaviest snow in Erie County -- 2 inches -- was in Springville.

A southwest flow of warmer air will take snow out of the forecast for the next few days. Temperatures were expected to approach 50 today. Rain is expected tonight and Saturday.
