JURY RULES AGAINST AIDE IN LACKAWANNA FIRING

A federal court jury Thursday ruled against a former Lackawanna economic development director who contended that he was fired as punishment for taking sick leave with a back injury.

Jurors found no wrongdoing by Lackawanna Mayor Kathleen M. Staniszewski in her August 1994 firing of a former top aide, Andrew Eszak, who contended in a lawsuit that the firing violated the U.S. Family and Medical Leave Act. Eszak was seeking $1.3 million in damages.

The jury deliberated for about an hour before issuing its verdict after a trial before U.S. Magistrate Judge Edmund F. Maxwell.
