The American Association of Retired Persons teamed with the state attorney general's office to obtain a positive outcome from a tactic used in telemarketing scams.
AARP volunteers staged a "Reverse Boiler Room" operation this afternoon from the ballroom of the Buffalo Hilton. They called more than 800 people across the state and warned them that their names have been found on telemarketing "mooch" lists.
Law enforcement officials said "repeated victimization of the elderly" is the "cornerstone of illegal telemarketing." Telemarketing frauds cheat Americans out of an estimated $40 billion every year.
