A petition for a lower speed limit on the east end of Clarence Center Road paid off Wednesday night as the Clarence Town Board reduced the limit from 55 to 35 mph.
The growing number of homes between Strickler and Hehr roads, plus town soccer fields and a church, made the action necessary, Councilwoman Anne L. Case said.
In other business, the board approved plans by Jean and Dale VanKuren to convert the vacant Old Lamplighter Restaurant at 6260 Goodrich Road in Clarence Center into a day-care center for preschoolers, with after-school programs for school children as well as summer activities.
The VanKurens said they will continue to operate their day-care center at Clarence Center and Goodrich roads.
The board approved a development plan for the 58-lot fourth phase of the Loch Lea subdivision in the Greiner-Transit roads area.
After public hearings, contracts for next year also were approved with five volunteer fire companies: Clarence Center, $263,185; East Amherst, $158,070; Harris Hill, $407,466; Rapids, $18,900, and Swormville, $82,436.
