George Foreman attracted an overflow crowd at a news conference on Broadway, formally announcing his Nov. 22 fight in Atlantic City with Shannon Briggs, a 25-year-old New Yorker with a 29-1 record.
And as usual, he disarmed his critics with a hustler's charm, and used their disparaging questions as a comic uses a straight man.
"Why?" the 48-year-old Foreman (76-4) said, playing along, "I'd like to know myself how much longer I can do this." And:
"Handpick my opponents? Hey, no doubt about it. I tried to get my son, George, but he said no way. I tried Pee Wee Herman, and that didn't work. So now I'm stuck with Shannon Briggs."
