WILLIAM R. BECKER, ELECTRICAL ENGINEER, SPORTSMAN

William R. Becker, 63, a retired electrical engineer and dedicated sportsman who moved from Grand Island in mid-1996, died Oct. 2, 1997, in Moneta, Va., after a brief illness.

Born in Buffalo, he was a graduate of St. Joseph's Collegiate Institute and Erie County Technical Institute. He attended the University of Colorado at Denver and was a veteran of the Air Force.

Becker's work took him all over the nation, including Chicago, Florida and California. Most recently, he worked for Tunmore Oldsmobile in North Buffalo and at HMS Electric. In the past, he had worked for Linde Corp. as an electrician.

A member of the Grand Island Rod & Gun Club, he also was active as a boater.

Becker was a member of St. Stephen's Catholic Church on Grand Island. He served as an usher.

Surviving are his wife, Nancy Roska Becker; five daughters, Melissa of Moneta, Catherine Gaines of Wichita, Kan., Lyn Davey, Lynda Harris and Laurie Pleuckhahn; three sons, Dr. William of Columbus, Ohio, Robert and Mike; his father, William; four sisters, Marilyn Kostek of Amherst, Carol Cournan of Rochester, Sandra Horton of Houston and Donna McCartney; and eight grandchildren.

A memorial Mass will be offered at 9:30 a.m. Saturday in St. Stephen's Church, 2100 Baseline Road, Grand Island. He was buried today in Arlington (Va.) National Cemetery.
