Frederick Law Olmsted was a visionary man, and his parks and plans were dynamic. But for all his genius, he was still a man of his time -- Buffalo of 100 years ago. He'd never met a soccer mom, a jogger or rollerblader. If he had, he would have worked them into his design.

Let's thank Olmsted for his gift to our city. But let's stop canonizing him and using his 100-year-old vision as an obstacle to everything from a new zoo to a new bridge to Canada. There are people around today with good ideas, too!

And about that new bridge and the unimaginative design: If the 70-year-old span is so beautiful that we are locked into using it as the basis for all new bridges, I vote for a tunnel to Canada.
