A veteran Los Angeles police officer committed suicide after being questioned about a hit-and-run accident that seriously injured a woman and her 10-month-old daughter, a police spokeswoman said Saturday.
Officer Bryce "Ray" Wicks, 54, committed suicide Friday at his home after being questioned about the incident which happened Thursday evening. The hit-and-run left Juanita Mercado, 23, with a broken arm and collarbone and her daughter in need of plastic surgery, said LAPD spokeswoman Officer Helen Lloyd.
Wicks, a 28-year veteran of the LAPD, was a top fingerprint expert.
Witnesses told police a white Ford Bronco hit the mother and child on a crosswalk in North Hollywood. The Bronco caught the child's stroller and dragged it for several hundred yards until the child was ejected when the vehicle turned a corner.
