GERSTUNG SHIFTS TO BOCES JOB, LEAVES OPENING IN SPECIAL ED

The Franklinville Central School Board of Education has accepted the resignation of Allan Gerstung as director of special education and coordinator of state and federal entitlements, effective Friday.

Gerstung is leaving the district to become area supervisor for special education with the Erie II, Cattaraugus, Chautauqua Board of Cooperative Educational Services, based at Pioneer Central School in Yorkshire.

Superintendent Richard M. Wachter said the School Board acted last week to begin advertising today for an administrator for special education.

Because of the vacancy, an alternative education program for six or seven students on the Franklinville campus must be moved to a BOCES classroom in Ellicottville, Olean or at Pioneer Central, Wachter said.

The school's building principals and Wachter will share Gerstung's other special-education responsibilities until a replacement can be found.

In other business, the board awarded a contract to Gleason Nursery of Amherst for work on a new creative playground.

The company was the low bidder, with $85,635 for playground equipment, $18,654 for pavement and $5,800 for drainage.

Wachter said the board will continue to consider transportation alternatives, but was unable, for now, to accommodate Walter Wise, a parent who had complained that his child's 40-minute bus ride is too long.
