Six airplanes rocked their wings in a salute to John Denver on Saturday before a memorial service that drew together about 1,000 friends, fans and family members in his adopted hometown.

The tribute came a day after 2,000 people turned out for a service in suburban Denver.

In Aspen, brilliant sunshine greeted the crowd at the Aspen Music Tent, a concert venue on the west end of town.

"John would have loved today's weather," said Tom Crum, a close friend.

The 53-year-old singer, known for "Sunshine on My Shoulder" and "Rocky Mountain High" among other hits, died last Sunday when his experimental airplane crashed in Monterey Bay, Calif. The cause of the crash is still under investigation.
