"Peanuts" cartoonist Charles M. Schulz, a World War II combat veteran, donated $1 million to help make sure D-Day is never forgotten.

Schulz made the big gift and has signed on to head fund-raising to help build the National D-Day Memorial in Bedford, Va., to commemorate the Allied invasion of Normandy, France, on June 6, 1944.

The Virginia town was chosen as the memorial site because it suffered such heavy casualties on D-Day. Of the 35 soldiers from Bedford, 19 died during the first 14 minutes of the invasion and two more died later that day.
