Helen Coons, 84, a former Buffalo resident who was active with support groups for local Catholic educational institutions, died Wednesday (Oct. 15, 1997) in Gainesville, Fla.
The former Helen Carr had moved from the Buffalo area about 20 years ago. She was a native of New Brunswick, Canada, and came to Buffalo in 1946, after her marriage to Charles Coons, who survives her in Gainesville.
Mrs. Coons was a longtime member of St. Thomas Aquinas Church where she served on the Rosary and Altar Society. She was also active in the Mothers' Club at Bishop Timon High School and Mount Mercy Academy.
Besides her husband, she is survived by four daughters, Mary Lu Matchen of Fort Lauderdale, Fla.; Catherine McDermott of Buffalo, Margaret Schuler of Austin, Texas, and Eileen Deegan of St. Petersburg, Fla.; three sons, Charles of Middleton, R.I.; Daniel and Timothy of Gainesville; a sister, Mary Brown of Mississauga, Ont.; a brother, Jeff Carr of Boisetown, Neb.; 22 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
A memorial Mass was to be held today in Holy Faith Catholic Church, Gainesville.
