WILSON ASSESSOR TAKING SCHOOL TAX APPLICATIONS

Town Assessor Milton S. Bradshaw announced his office will begin accepting applications from senior citizens Nov. 3 for the new state school tax reduction program, dubbed STAR. The last day to apply is March 1, 1998.

Bradshaw has planned explanatory meetings with senior citizens for 10:30 a.m. Tuesday in the Wilson Fire Company hall, 250 Young St., and 10 a.m. next Friday in Town Hall, 375 Lake St.

Eligible persons are those over age 65 with incomes of less than $60,000. Those applying before Jan. 1 must bring proof of their 1996 income; after Jan. 1, proof of 1997 income will be required. All applicants must bring proof of age.

"Low-income seniors who currently receive the pre-existing exemption automatically qualify for the STAR exemption," Bradshaw said. Those persons need only apply when they receive their forms in the mail during January.

The new exemption applies only to a taxpayer's primary owner-occupied residence.

The STAR exemption will not be offered to those
property owners under 65 until
November 1998.
