Sister Mary Judith O'Neil, 66, a longtime teacher and administrator at Mount Mercy Academy, South Buffalo, died Wednesday (Oct. 15, 1997) in Our Lady of Mercy Infirmary, Orchard Park, after a long illness.
A member of the Sisters of Mercy for 48 years, Sister Judith had a lengthy career in education that included 21 years as a teacher and vice principal at Mount Mercy Academy. Prior to becoming ill a year ago, she had served as a chaplain for five years at St. Jerome Hospital, Batavia.
Earlier, Sister Judith was a chaplain at Kenmore Mercy Hospital.
During her teaching years, Sister Judith also was a member of the administrative team and a teacher at St. Teresa's School, Buffalo. Other teaching assignments were at St. Martin's, Holy Family and St. Anthony's schools, all in Buffalo, Our Lady of the Sacred Heart School, Orchard Park, St. James School, Jamestown and Holy Family School, Le Roy.
Born in Buffalo, the former Catherine Agnes O'Neil entered the Sisters of Mercy in 1949 and took her vows in 1952.
Sister Judith attended Our Lady of Good Counsel Elementary School, Blasdell, Mount Mercy Academy and Canisius College. She had a bachelor's degree in Spanish from the former Mount St. Joseph College, now Medaille, and a master's degree in Spanish from the University of Notre Dame.
With the help of academic grants, Sister Judith also studied at the University of Vallodolid, Spain, and at Georgetown University.
She is survived by two sisters, Elizabeth of Orchard Park and Jean McCabe; and a brother, Ronald of Blasdell.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 7 p.m. Friday in Our Mother of Good Counsel Church, 3680 South Park Ave., Blasdell. There will be a Vigil Service at 7 p.m. today in Our Lady of Mercy Convent, 5245 Murphy Road, Orchard Park. Burial will be Holy Cross Cemetery, Lackawanna.
