Property-tax rates will drop by 30 percent in the Town of Chautauqua next year under a $1.58 million budget approved by the Town Board Tuesday night.

Town Supervisor James Weidman III said the tax rate outside the Village of Mayville will drop from 10 cents per $1,000 of assessed value to 7 cents. Inside the village the rate will be reduced by a penny, from $1.16 to $1.15.

Weidman said the cuts "result from a combination of factors using part of the town's unexpected fund balance, anticipated strong sales-tax revenues and remaining debt free."
