MAN HELD, SECOND SUSPECT SOUGHT IN BEATING, ROBBERY

A Southampton Street man and an unidentified suspect beat a 67-year-old French Street man with a hammer early today during a robbery in a home on the 400 block of Jefferson Avenue, according to Broadway Station police.

Officers Timothy Mulhern and Norman Appleford charged Shawn D. Roberts, 27, with taking $250 and with criminal possession of a weapon, police said.

Police apprehended Roberts on Williams Street and brought him to Erie County Medical Center, where Walter Rogers identified him as one of the persons who attacked him at about 1:30 a.m., police said.

Rogers was treated in the medical center for head injuries before being released, according to authorities.

The second suspect remained at large, police said. The hammer and cash were not recovered.
