The Village of Depew has received two county grants totaling $5,500 for renovating the village justice's chambers and the senior citizens center on Manitou Street.

A $1,500 senior services grant will be used to purchase and install an illuminated senior citizen center sign, scheduled to be installed Friday. A $4,000 justice grant was awarded for numerous courtroom upgrades.

In other business this week, the board awarded playground equipment contracts of $10,449 to Miracle Recreation and $10,550 to Marturano Recreation for the West Dawson Street and St. James Street playgrounds.

THe board also authorized the mayor to sign the annual STOP-DWI agreement with the county and authorized the village clerk to advertise for bids for three new police vehicles and one utility van for the Electrical Department.

Trustee John Fragale informed the board that the village Zoning Board has been formally petitioned to reconsider its decision denying a variance for a sign at JoJo's Custard on George Urban Boulevard. The Zoning Board denied the variance because the sign -- a 12-foot ice-cream cone -- is oversized. The business owners said the removal of the sign has hurt sales.
