Wild card entrant Arnaud Clement of France upset his second top 10 player in a week, beating U.S. Open champion Patrick Rafter of Australia, 6-3, 7-6 (7-5), in the first round of the $750,000 Lyon (France) Grand Prix. The top-seeded and No. 3 ranked player in the world, Rafter was playing for the first time since losing to Pete Sampras in the Grand Slam Cup final two weeks ago.
Clement beat Sergi Bruguera, ranked No. 8, last week in Vienna before losing to former Wimbledon champion Richard Krajicek. Clement was ranked only 136th in the world last week, but will jump into the top 100 after his two big victories.
