STOCKTON OUT 6-8 WEEKS AFTER KNEE SURGERY

John Stockton will be sidelined for the first six to eight weeks of the season following knee surgery, ending a streak in which he has played more than seven straight seasons without missing a game.

The star guard of the Utah Jazz had arthroscopic surgery Monday night to repair what the team said was significant cartilage damage to his left knee.

Meanwhile, Knicks guard Chris Childs fractured his left eye socket when he was elbowed by San Antonio's David Robinson Sunday night in an exhibition game at Syracuse. Terming the injury a minimally displaced fracture of the left orbit, the Knicks said Childs would be sidelined for a week and then re-evaluated.
